On this date 196 years ago, September 12, 1826, William Morgan was kidnapped from his jail cell in Canandaigua, New York, triggering what has been dubbed the "The Morgan Affair."
Morgan, a member of the Fraternity, purportedly planned to expose the secrets of Freemasonry in print, causing a stir amongst local Freemasons. The press speculated that he was kidnapped and killed for this reason.
This incident sparked anti-Masonic sentiments across the United States and resulted in America's first "Third Party" in politics - the Anti-Masonic Party.
This movement had strong support in Pennsylvania, being lead by firebrand Thaddeus Stevens.
