Lodge of women Freemasons meeting in Boston
In 1778, there appears to have been a Lodge of women Freemasons meeting in Boston. Reference to this Lodge has been found in writings from Hannah Mather Crocker. In her book "A Series of Letters on Free Masonry", she defends the reputation of the Fraternity, noting a "similar institution" called St. Anne's Lodge. If Hannah's name sounds familiar, it is because she was the grand daughter of famous puritan Cotton Mather, and the daughter of Increase Mather, who served as an early President of Harvard College. She became famous in her own right as an early champion of women's rights. (Source: The Idiot's Guide to Freemasonry by S. Brent Morris.)
